Biomedical scientific publication patterns in the Scopus database : a case study of Andalusia, Spain

Fri, 09/28/2012 - 12:53
2012-09-28T11:53:46Z Chinchilla-Rodríguez, Zaida López-Illescas, Carmen De-Moya-Anegón, Félix This paper characterises scientific output in biomedicine in Andalusia, and Spain as a whole, and conduct a first-time comparison to Europe- and world-wide production. The data were extracted from the Scopus database. Three families of indicators are explored to analyse research quantity, quality and collaboration. The results show an upward trend on biomedical output in Andalusia. Over 50 % was in clinical medicine, whose growth doubled the basic medicine. We found greater than nationwide specialisation in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, immunology and microbiology, and pharmacology, while psychology proved to be the most prominent emerging area. The publication in most cited journals together with national and international collaboration enhanced research visibility. More citable papers were published on basic than clinical medicine, and the number of citations received by the former was also larger. The higher citation rate in basic medicine may also be explained by the bigger percentage of papers published in international instead domestic journals. Hence, publication patterns would appear to affect research visibility. The methodology proposed may provide guidance for public policy makers to improve, encourage and intensify good biomedical research practice.

Strategi Perpustakaan Nasional melakukan branding melalui naskah kuno dan koleksi langka,

Fri, 09/28/2012 - 03:42
2012-09-28T02:42:25Z Ali, Irhamni The evolution of marketing strategies has changed all of theories and methods in marketing, including in libraries in marketing their products and institution. One marketing strategy that evolves today is Branding, Branding is a collection of theory and practice which aims to measure, build and manage the reputation of an institution. National Library of Republic Indonesia has a collection of 10,912 manuscripts and more than 100,000 copies of rare books, those are a great strength for the National Library Republic of Indonesia to make them as their Brand Ambasador in marketing the institution. The result of this effort is UNESCO declared Three ancient manuscript of National Library Of Republic Indonesia entitled Negara Kertagama as Memory Of The Word in 2008 and La Galigo also Babad Dipanagara as Memory Of The Word in 2011. Various attempts were made by the National Library of Republic Indonesia to set branding with the ancient manuscripts and rare books such as revamping the procurement policy of the manuscript, conducting literacy programs and the transcription of manuscripts, as well as promotion the content of rare books and manuscripts, however, there are some constraints and obstacles encountered by National Library of Republic Indonesia to promote the ancient manuscripts and rare books including budget policy, the difficulty of procuring ancient manuscripts and rare collectibles scattered in Indonesia and Overseas as well as the difficulty of finding native speakers of languages used from the ancient manuscripts and rare books in Indonesia.

Among other aspects, the findings shows that the safeguarded their disciplinary differences, search, access and communication activities, regardless of the knowledge area, occurring mainly in the digital environment; communication habits are stimulated by motives common to scientists and social scientists and humanists, share knowledge and visibility are the main reasons for the dissemination of research results, physicists are naturally within the open access context.

How to mobilize your library at low cost

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 20:43
2012-09-27T19:43:34Z Abarca-Villoldo, Marta Lloret-Salom, Andrés Pons-Chaigneau, David Rubio, Francisco Vallés-Navarro, Raquel The W3C defines the mobile web as a web in which users are able to access information from any location, regardless of the type of device used. In recent years, Internet access from mobile devices has grown considerably. This is due to many factors such as technological improvements of these devices, faster data transmission and lower connection costs. This new context has led to the creation of various mobile web tools which offer a variety of features, such as adaptability of web websites, use of QR codes (Quick Response), geolocation tools, augmented reality and RFID technology just to name a few. Technological advances give rise to new challenges. We should face this situation not as a threat or added workload, but as an opportunity to adapt the library to the new demands or needs of our users. This means that some of the services currently offered by the library will have to evolve, for example, with the creation of a mobile website or a mOPAC (mobile OPAC). New services could be offered, such as QR codes embedded in the catalog with bibliographical information, virtual reference through the mobile or geolocation of libraries. This paper will first provide some basic and introductory information on the mobile web. It will then go on to describe some tools used in this area. In some cases, different options will be shown taking into account factors such as cost, for example. The aim here will be to provide an overview that will allow a given library to select the best tool according to their functions and their budgets. Finally, a list of library applications will be given, as well as their associated implementation processes in the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) library. The ultimate goal of this paper is to encourage the creation and adaptation of services offered in libraries, placing special emphasis on the idea that a variety of services can be offered with just basic computer skills and a small staff, since in many cases these tools are available free of charge. In other words, these are low-cost tools that offer high returns to the user.

Analysis and visualization of the dynamics of research groups in terms of projects and co-authored publications. A case study of library and information science in Argentina

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 20:37
2012-09-27T19:37:30Z Miguel, Sandra Chinchilla-Rodríguez, Zaida González, Claudia De-Moya-Anegón, Félix Objective: The present study offers a novel methodological contribution to the study of the configuration and dynamics of research groups, through a comparative perspective of the projects funded (inputs) and publication co-authorships (output). Method: A combination of bibliometric techniques and social network analysis was applied to a case study: the Departmento de Bibliotecología (DHUBI), Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, for the period 2000-2009. The results were interpreted statistically and staff members of the department, were interviewed. Results: The method makes it possible to distinguish groups, identify their members and reflect group make-up through an analytical strategy that involves the categorization of actors and the interdisciplinary and national or international projection of the networks that they configure. The integration of these two aspects (input and output) at different points in time over the analyzed period leads to inferences about group profiles and the roles of actors. Conclusions: The methodology presented is conducive to micro-level interpretations in a given area of study, regarding individual researchers or research groups. Because the comparative input-output analysis broadens the base of information and makes it possible to follow up, over time, individual and group trends, it may prove very useful for the management, promotion and evaluation of science.

Análise das restrições de acesso a dados de espécies ameaçadas, previstas em políticas de coleções biológicas científicas brasileiras, à luz do direito ambiental e da ciência da informação

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 19:36
2012-09-27T18:36:19Z Gonzalez, Marcos The objective of this article is to examine whether the policies for access to data stored in biological collections and produced by the Research Program in Biodiversity (PPBio), Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), are in accordance to the relevant Brazilian legislation. It was evaluated whether the restrictions on access to data of threatened species, present in the policies of the three research institutes of MCT studied, are provided by law or sustained by the Information Science. The conclusion is that, according the Brazilian law, there is no support which provides for or encourages restrictions to accessing data of biological species because it is included in the list of threatenced species. Brazilian policies are not in accordance to the legislation or prevailing mentality in the scientifi c community. The suggestion is that, based on a broad discussion about the subject, these policies should be reviewed. This is a complex subject which concerns the whole society.

Evolução teórico-metodológica dos estudos de comportamento informacional de usuários

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 19:27
2012-09-27T18:27:14Z Gasque, Kelley Cristine Costa, Sely Maria The objective of this article is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how user information behaviour studies have been dealt with in literature on information science for the last six decades. The analysis is based on the reviews published in the journal Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (Arist), as well as on additional works that complement the topic approached showing its theoretical and methodological evolution. analyses. A crucial difference identified is related to the conceptual change occurred, showing a wider epistemological view of the studies. This change, on the other hand, is referred mainly to the terminology used to defi ne the topic, which is changed from "studies of users" or "needs and use of information" to informational behavior of users".The change, however, is not only terminological but also a paradigmatic change, as a result of transformation in how the topic is defi ned and approached, as well as how the research is carried out.

Espaço interativo: modelo de relação universidade – empresa baseada em comunidades de prática

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 19:15
2012-09-27T18:15:48Z Cornélio, Neiva Aparecida Abreu, Aline Costa, Eliete This article presents a summary of a research project from the Innovation, Management and Information Technology Research Group (IGTI/UFSC) whose objective was to develop a model of relations between universities and enterprises through an environment that promotes the dissemination of science, technology and innovation. The model encourages the construction of knowledge from the technologies used in everyday business, to promote the process of knowledge transfer from educational/research institutions to productive sector. The construction method of this model comprises 5 stages: 1) operative phase (defi nition of the subject, gathering information and defi ning the problem) 2) review of literature (involving the themes of knowledge management, innovation management, and communities of practice), 3) diagnostic (information-gathering about business scenario and research center where the pilot project was developed,) 4) development of the model, 5) implementation of the pilot project. The conclusion is that the work greatly contributes to develop a model that can stimulate the approach of university knowledge to business practice, creating favorable conditions for innovation.

Relações mútuas entre informação e conhecimento: o mesmo conceito?

Thu, 09/27/2012 - 18:48
2012-09-27T17:48:13Z Xavier, Rodolfo Da Costa, Rubenildo The proximity between information and knowledge concepts causes conceptual disorder in Information Science studies. On the other hand, the establishment of a scientific discipline depends of the conceptual clarity about its study object. In view of this, the proposal hypothesis demonstrates the necessity to map the conceptual relations between information (area study object) and knowledge, aiming to show the distinction of these, to be used with less ambiguity by researchers. Thus, it discusses, first, the Information Science concepts and its study object, under three paradigms proposed by Capurro, following: physical, social and cognoscente, finally, some relations conceptual between information and knowledge and their consequences - there are similarity relations between them, but that does not mean that they become identical. Previous definitions of such terms may have found these relationships, however, rarely the subject was dealt with off and carefully, in the justification false of that debate is purely theoretical and do not lead to any useful result.

A integração disciplinar na ciência da informação: os não-ditos sobre essa familiar desconhecida

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 20:12
2012-09-26T19:12:35Z Souza, Edivanio Dias, Eduardo José A considerable part of the epistemological studies in the field of Information Science, in Brazil, bears on a vector interdisciplinarity. However, some cases betray the difficulties of disciplinary integration and epistemological consolidation. These are based on construction of bibliometric indicators, excluding the discourse functions that reflect the sense effects arising there from. The objective of this paper is to understand the implicit and latent effects in the constitution of this discourse and the potential epistemological barriers to the consolidation of Information Science. The analytical corpus is based on 12 articles selected from the scientific Brazilian production which discuss the disciplinary integration in Information Science. Selection of the articles was based on an analysis developed in a previous phase of this research, seeking the construction of its object and discursive processes. The analysis and discussions were based on discourse analysis of French tradition. The discourse of interdisciplinarity, in information science, is permeated by more than one discursive formation, but is anchored by the dominant discourse which has as its vector the determinations of the informational development mode. This discourse uses naturalizing and generalizing strategies to mask its ideological contour. The fragility in the processes of disciplinary integration translates itself into a difficulty in the epistemological establishment and consolidation of Information Science.

Coautoria na produção científica do PPGGeo/UFRGS: uma análise de redes sociais

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 20:05
2012-09-26T19:05:41Z De Lima, Maycke In this article it was studied the scientific collaboration networks formed from a group of researchers linked to the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geociências da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (PPGGeo/ UFRGS), based on a theoretical-methodological approach known as social network analysis (SNA), considering some concepts from Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice, and focusing on the identification, characterization and the structural evolution of scientific co-authorship networks. Three networks were built based on data from the CAPES’ Cadernos de Indicadores related to the intervals 1998-2000, 2001-2003 and 2004-2006. The results characterized the structure of the networks, comparing them, focusing on their connectivity and centrality, taking into consideration the research lines, projects and groups of actors. The networks of 1998-2000, 2001-2003 and 2004-2006 had, respectively, 524 actors and 11.296 links; 576 actors and 14.674 links; 741 actors and 14.188 links. It was found that the central/dominant group of actors in the networks is formed mainly by teachers and, in general, this group tends to remain in the central/dominant positions over the years; it was also found that there are partnerships recurrences in the scientific knowledge production in the three networks, culminating in a social reproduction of the co-authorship network structure.

Pesquisas na pós-graduação: o uso do pensamento reflexivo no letramento informacional

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 19:56
2012-09-26T18:56:23Z Gasque, Kelley Cristine The objective of this paper is to present the results of a PhD degree research carried out for identifying the type of relation between the reflexive thinking, as proposed by Dewey (1910) and the competencies used in searching and using the information in the scientific communication by education researchers and master and doctorate degree students. The theory lain down by Glasser and Strauss guided the methodological procedures for the research. Zeichner’s and Liston’s (1985) indicators of reflexive activity enabled to verify the type of the researchers’ thought. The results show that a major part of the thought utilized in search and use of information is a non-reflexive type. The information literacy is influenced by experiences and feelings concerning research on basic education, on graduation, as well as by sharing projects of scientific initiation. Influence is also had by academic culture, teachers’ attitude in relation to the search and use of information, concept of teaching-learning, infrastructure and costs of information. The relations present in this research are of multi-referential nature, what demands interdisciplinary instruments for solution of the problem.

A utilização das estatísticas criminais no planejamento da ação policial: cultura e contexto organizacional como elementos centrais à sua compreensão

Wed, 09/26/2012 - 19:51
2012-09-26T18:51:43Z De Azevedo, Ana Luísa Riccio, Vicente Ruediger, Marco Aurélio The use of information on the planning of police activities is one of the core issues concerning the debate on the contemporary public security paradigms. Thus, the criminal statistics are an important instrument in this process. This article promotes a discussion about the usage of criminal statistics as a source of information in their planning actions. Three variables were considered on the paper’s development: the contemporary policing paradigms; the usage and the functionalities of criminal statistics in their planning activities; and the usage of criminal statistics by law enforcement officers and their organizational context. As a conclusion, the paper considers the necessity to observe the culture and structure of police institutions as a key element in a model of policing based on intelligence, pro-activity and crime prevention.
